  • Ganjapreneur and Adult Film Legend Buck Angel Talks LGBTQ Activism and the Canna-Biz

Diving right in, we got the goods on Buck’s business ventures, including his Pride Wellness cannabis brand and the Buck Shot CBD-infused sexual enhancement drink. While he’s most famously known as “The Man with a Vagina” from his groundbreaking work as a transgender adult film star, Buck has since gone full ganjapreneur, with the explicit goal of ensuring a place for LGBTQ-focused business in the burgeoning space (“If we lose, a piece of this pie is not going to go to the people that need it the most.”).

Pride Cannabis is now Pride Wellness—the same products you love, just with a more fitting name. For the owners, the name change was a no-brainer. “Our company is a wellness company; it makes more sense,” explains Co-Owner Buck Angel. “It’s very important that people understand why we started Pride Wellness. We realize our community does suffer from a lot of abuse of drugs and alcohol, as well as anxiety. Nobody is really targeting our community for wellness with cannabis. That’s why we started it—to really help people to understand they can use alternative medication like cannabis, instead of pharmaceuticals.”

  • Trans Porn Star Buck Angel Is Selling Weed — For a Good Cause
The entrepreneur explains how cannabis can improve quality of life and health for LGBTQ+ people.

A week after marijuana became legal in California, Buck Angel slid into a banquette at the back of a dark Hollywood bar and took a long hit of his vape pen. The iconic activist and self proclaimed “tranpa” of the adult movie world was coming off of two full days working a sex-toy expo, where he had introduced his second trans-specific toy, and was preparing to leave in a few days for a worldwide speaking tour. He claimed to be exhausted, but you never would have known. Even in a black suit vest and thick black-rimmed glasses, Angel had the look of a leather-daddy biker dude, all muscles and mustache and tattoos, and the energy of a kid on sugar.

That night alone he was managing several pursuits at once. His cannabis company, Pride Wellness, was sponsoring the jazzy “Marijuana Madness” burlesque show that was about to begin, which meant that bartenders were serving cocktails and non-alcoholic mocktails infused with one of his products, made from the trendy, won’t-get-you-high cannabinoid CBD. After a decade of being one of the most well-known trans men in the world, breaking barriers and educating queer and straight folks alike, Angel had set his sights on the $40 billion marijuana industry, and using his role as an influencer to bring the healing powers of weed back to the LGBTQ+ community, where the legalization movement began.

Their donations focus specifically on LGBTQ seniors for the center, donating over $4,000 in 2019 alone, commemorated with a giant check handoff during L.A. Trans Pride Fest

  • Being LGBTQ in the Cannabis Industry: A Roundtable Discussion
All eyes are on the LGBTQ community during Pride month. June often becomes full of fabulous celebrations, “woke” marketing tactics, and sometimes difficult discussions about LGBTQ rights, representation, equality, and advocacy.

Weedmaps News sat down with four cannabis industry leaders — Christine De La Rosa, co-founder of The People's Dispensary in Oakland, California; Leon Mostovoy, founder of Wings of Wellness and co-founder of Pride Wellness in Los Angeles; Buck Angel, co-founder of Pride Wellness; and Katie Stem, co-founder of Peak Extracts — who identify as members of the LGBTQ community to ask them where they see the LGBTQ community's place in weed culture at large.

The roundtable of business owners help dissect the effective ways that advocacy and protest history for LGBTQ rights and cannabis legality are interwoven, as well as how consumers can be a part of Pride without feeling like they are taking advantage or co-opting LGBTQ people with rainbow swag.
